China is not a modern civilization, rather it is not a civilised nation.
Recent history: Opium wars, Chinese civil war (where mostly Han Chinese were fighting each other along ideological lines - the Chinese Communist Party or the C.C.P. led by Mao Tse-Chung was losing most of the battles to the Chinese nationalists led by Chiang Kai-Shek), then after the establishment of the People's Republic on mainland China by Mao, misrule by Mao ensued the death of some 60 million people (no one knows the exact number, not even the Chinese government) due to the famine caused by the Great Leap Forward from 1958-62 and then ~ 4 yr later, the decade long Cultural Revolution where young ☭ s (the Red Guards) were allowed to go on a rampage and destroy the Four Olds (Old ideas, Old culture, Old habits and Old customs). During the Cultural Revolution, universities were closed and the Red Guards went on a rampage killing professors, teachers, basically anyone who expressed a liking towards burgeiose ideas (democracy and an independent judiciary were also considered burgeoise ideas), destroying ancient manuscripts regarding Chinese academic achievements, Traditional Chinese Medicine (T.C.M.), statues of the Buddha, other statues, paintings (basically what the Chinese people and also the government of China or the Chinese Communist Party or the C.C.P., keep referring to the 5k year old Chinese culture was destroyed). The Cultural Revolution only ended with Mao's death in 1976.
In 1979, 🇨🇳 was desperately in need of foreign investment from the west and so the government of 🇨🇳 led by Deng Xiaoping allowed foreign investment and created Special Economic Zones (SEZs) while also allowing Chinese citizens to start their own businesses and farmers to sell their produce to whichever buyer they wanted. However, the government of 🇨🇳 still led by the C.C.P., rules out any political reform. The economic reform of the late 1970s in 🇨🇳 resulted in a huge income inequality between the underdeveloped rural areas and the affluent urban areas and this along with corruption in the C.C.P., resulted in crime. Deng's successor, Jiang Zemin also cracked down on the spiritual movement called the Falun Gong (he even set up a secret police unit called the 610 Office in 1999 to abduct and disappear Falun Gong practitioners). The reason why the C.C.P. hates the practices of Falun Dafa or Falun Gong is that this movement promotes spiritualism which the C.C.P. thinks deviates people's thinking away from materials and the Chinese Communist Party feels threatened by it as it has always stressed materialism, i.e., money worship and claimed that the practise of spirituality is against the principles of communism especially that of the Karl Marx. So, therefore Chinese citizens should pursue wealth. The problem of course, is that in 🇨🇳, you can only become wealthy if you have the right political connections. This means that the poor in 🇨🇳 have no option but to work low-paid factory jobs and the wealth gap between the urban rich vs. the poor results in several crimes across 🇨🇳 like mass stabbings (as the civilian-ownership of firearms is mostly prohibited), scamming, trafficking of women (thanks to the one-child policy, many families aoned daughters if they couldn't get a sex-selective abortion performed on the pregnant woman) for commercial sexual exploitation, evictions of people from the land they live on and in rural areas, the farmland that people cultivate by the government with the help of thugs is commonplace.
Infact, the situation is so bad that in 🇨🇳, because the government harasses people who help people in need, DON'T EXPECT ANY GOOD SAMARITANS TO COME AND HELP YOU IF YOU FAINT ON THE STREET as people don't have any religious reason to follow good moral values and more importantly, no one wants to get into unwanted trouble with the government. This benefits the C.C.P. to a great extent as people are basically divided and don't put up a organized resistance against the government
